This project reimagines an existing family home in a mature Cape Town suburb, preparing it for a new generation of living. The design restructures the outdated layout to introduce two new en-suite bedrooms, a dedicated work-from-home office, and a flexible family and play room, creating a clearer hierarchy between private and communal spaces. A new garage and a fully independent additional dwelling unit extend the site’s functionality and long-term value.
The intervention also resolves long-standing practical issues. The steep driveway is regraded to eliminate flooding, and the arrival sequence is redesigned to restore dignity to the main entrance. The ageing asbestos roof is removed and replaced with a contemporary, eco-friendly system that improves safety, comfort, and thermal performance.
Architecturally, the scheme is guided by climate and restraint. Deep recessed walls provide passive shading in Cape Town’s hot summers while drawing in soft winter light. A refined roof structure and pergola system modulate solar exposure and create a calm transition between interior and garden. Materials are deliberately modest, low-maintenance, and elegant—chosen to bring quiet coherence to a home long shaped by piecemeal additions. The result is a poised, durable, and contemporary upgrade that allows the property to sit confidently within its leafy suburban context.
